The ASTRA National Museum Complex (Museum Of Traditional Folk Civilization) was established in 1963 and is the largest open-air ethnography exhibit in Europe.⁠ This open-air museum spreads across 90 hectares and encompasses traditional Romanian households, from different regions and periods. ⁠

What makes ASTRA so mesmerizing is the fact that it’s situated in the Dumbrava Forest, and the households are arranged into small villages, giving you the impression you magically time-traveled to a whole different period.⁠

We will start our trip at The ASTRA Museum, followed by a trip to Rășinari and Cisnădioara, two villages near Sibiu, where one can still find well-preserved parts of the past.⁠

The detailed description
The ASTRA museum is the second largest open air museum in Europe and covers an area of 90ha. You will see here traditional Romanian structures from different regions of Romania, organized as a “village” inside the museum.

After we experience a part of the Romanian traditions in the ASTRA museum, we will go further to Rășinari. Rășinari has its own charm and is one of the most beautiful villages of Romania. After a coffee break, we are going to take an easy walk to Cisnădioara (about 1h30min).

Cisnădioara is not far from Rășinari. We will end our day here with a visit to the fortified church in Cisnădioara. From there we have a wonderful view over the village and the mountains.
