Câlnic differs from the fortified churches: here a nobleman, Count Chyl, built a keep with a ring wall around 1270, which the village community bought in 1430 and enlarged into a refuge. The keep, the chapel with frescoes and the storerooms in the wall survive. The site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1999.
The fortress stands in the middle of the village, flat and without a climb, and is comfortably seen in an hour.
Câlnic lies on the way to Alba Iulia and is part of that day trip.
