Prejmer has the strongest fortified church in Eastern Europe: a ring wall twelve metres high and up to five thick, with 272 rooms on four levels along its inside, one per family, stocked for weeks of siege. Besieged fifty times, taken once.

The church in the middle was begun by the Teutonic Knights around 1218 on a Greek-cross plan, rare in Transylvania. On the wall walk stands the “organ of death”, a row of linked guns. UNESCO World Heritage since 1999.
