Hunedoara castle was enlarged from 1440 into a residence by John Hunyadi, voivode of Transylvania and father of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus. It is the largest Gothic castle in Transylvania: knights’ hall, chapel, wall walks, a long bridge over the Zlaști stream.
The town itself is a former steelworks centre; the castle stands at its edge, between housing blocks and industrial land. Allow one and a half to two hours for the visit.
Combined with Alba Iulia as a long day trip.
