Biertan was for three centuries the seat of the Lutheran bishops of Transylvania and has the strongest fortified church in the country: three rings of walls, seven towers, on a hill above the village square. The late Gothic church was completed in 1522; the altarpiece has 28 panels, the sacristy door a lock with 19 bolts, shown at the 1900 Paris World Fair.
In the small tower, the so-called matrimonial prison, quarrelling couples were to spend two weeks together. UNESCO World Heritage since 1993.
Day trip with Sighișoara and Mălâncrav.
